It is a commonly used informal Korean expression for someone who has never been in a romantic relationship. It is sometimes translated as “lifelong single”, but its meaning is more specific than simply being single.
International viewers may also recognise the expression through Netflix’s Better Late Than Single, whose original Korean title is 모태솔로지만 연애는 하고 싶어.

What Does Motae Solo Mean?

Where Does “Motae Solo” Come From?
The expression combines 모태 (motae / 母胎), which literally relates to the mother’s womb, with 솔로 (solo), meaning solo or single.
Together, 모태솔로 humorously suggests the idea of being “single since birth.” This meaning comes from the full expression. 모태 by itself does not mean “single since birth.”
Motae Solo vs. Just Being Single
The main difference is past dating experience. Someone who has dated before can be 솔로 (solo) now, but they would not normally be called a 모태솔로.
The most useful shortened form for learners to remember is 모솔 (mosol). You may also see 모쏠 in very casual online writing, but 모솔 is the form commonly used by Korean media and is the one we recommend learning first.
Why Are More International Viewers Hearing “Motae Solo”?
The expression is not new in Korea, but Korean dating shows, social media and online entertainment have made it increasingly familiar to international audiences.
A clear example is Netflix’s Better Late Than Single. Its original Korean title is:
The programme follows people with no previous dating experience as they take their first steps into dating and romance. Season 2 premiered in July 2026, and Netflix Korea itself uses the shortened form 모솔 in its promotional title 모솔연애2.
What Does the Conversation Mean?

- 소개팅 나갈래?
“Do you want to go on a blind date?” - 나 모태솔로인데… 괜찮을까?
“I’ve never dated before… Do you think it’ll be okay?” - 당연하지! 한번 만나 봐.
“Of course! Just meet the person and see how it goes.”
This short conversation shows how 모태솔로 can naturally come up when someone is talking about dating experience. It does not mean the person is against dating. They may simply feel nervous because they have never been in a relationship before.
Is “Motae Solo” a Formal Korean Expression?
모태솔로 is informal. You are more likely to hear it in casual conversation, dating programmes, social media, online communities and entertainment content than in formal writing. Like many popular Korean slang expressions used by native Koreans, its meaning and tone depend a lot on the situation.
Because it describes someone’s dating history, it is also worth using with a little care. People often use the expression humorously about themselves, but labelling another person a 모태솔로 can feel personal depending on the situation.
Other Korean Dating Words You May Hear

썸 (some) is used when there seems to be romantic interest between two people, but they are not officially a couple yet.

솔로 (solo) means someone who is currently single. Unlike 모태솔로, it does not tell you whether the person has dated in the past.
Why Korean Expressions Can Be Difficult to Learn From Subtitles Alone
Subtitles need to communicate meaning quickly and naturally, so one Korean expression can be translated in several different ways depending on the scene.
For example, 모태솔로 might appear in English subtitles as “lifelong single”, “never dated” or “never been in a relationship”. These translations communicate the idea, but they do not always show you the original Korean expression.
Once you begin understanding Korean directly, you start noticing the word choices, jokes and cultural nuances that can disappear in translation. That is one of the most enjoyable parts of learning the language.
